A number of street names have been suggested in the survey below in line with the NSW Geographical Names Board approval guidelines. These reflect either an historic link to early properties in the area or to the naval officer name theme used for several roads in the vicinity. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

  • A large program of infrastructure work is underway between Chatswood and Artarmon in preparation for the opening of Sydney Metro Northwest in the second quarter of 2019, and for the future connection to Sydney Metro City & Southwest which is scheduled to open in 2024.
  • A component of this work requires the permanent closure and subsequent removal of the Nelson Street bridge. The bridge will be closed to traffic and pedestrians during November 2018 with the removal of infrastructure scheduled to start in February 2019.
  • The removal of the bridge will split Nelson Street into two un-connected street segments requiring the re-naming of one section.
  • Council is the authority for naming local roads and on the 13th August 2018 resolved to seek feedback and suggestions for a suitable name for the resulting eastern section of Nelson Street. The western section of Nelson Street will retain the current name of Nelson Street.
  • Following a 3 week consultation period, all suggestions will be reviewed by council and a final candidate name presented to the NSW Geographical Names Board for approval.
  • Upon approval Council will publish a "notice" of the road naming proposal on their website and notify the following authorities.
    • Australia Post,
    • the Registrar-General,
    • the Surveyor-General,
    • the chief executive of the Ambulance Service of NSW,
    • Fire and Rescue NSW,
    • the NSW Rural Fire Service,
    • the NSW Police Force,
    • the NSW State Emergency Service,
    • the NSW Volunteer Rescue Association,

  • Council will consider any further public submissions and initiate the formal gazettal of the name.
